Jiggs GallagherJim "Jiggs" Gallagher

Jiggs Gallagher (formal name: James R. Gallagher) began life in Washington, D.C., where his father took one look at his red hair, screaming face and shaking fist in the nursery window and said, "He looks like Jiggs in the funny papers strip ‘Bringing Up Father,’ after a hard Saturday night!"

In addition to writing news and features for media release, the university’s news Web site and the university magazine, Gallagher serves as speechwriter to university President Albert Karnig. He also produces and hosts two half-hour interview format television programs featuring the university: Education Roundtable on KCSB-TV 3 (city of San Bernardino) and “Your Palm Desert Campus” on Coachella Valley’s Time Warner Cable-Desert Cities. And he serves as a writer for news and features at CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus.

Gallagher holds a bachelor's degree from Columbia Union College in Maryland with a double major in music and English and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York City. He has worked most of his life in print and radio journalism (Baltimore Sun, Baltimore News-American, Maryland public radio WGTS-FM) and non-profit public relations as PR director and assistant professor at Union College in Lincoln, Neb., and Glendale Adventist Medical Center near Los Angeles. From 1988 to 1999, he served as Southern California director of Elderhostel, a non-profit, college-level study-travel program for older adults.

He has also had a career in sacred music as well, working as organist, bass soloist and music director for churches and synagogues in Washington, D.C., Lincoln, Neb., and Southern California. He is currently organist-director at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Redlands.
