Sam Romero
Public Affairs/Media Specialist
California State University, San Bernardino
With Cal State San Bernardino since it enrolled almost 8,400 students, Sam Romero began his career at the university as a half-time public affairs assistant for the director of public affairs. It was a three-person shop when he took the post in September 1987. Now, more than 20 years and 17,000 students later, he is managing editor for the university’s CSUSB Magazine in an office that keeps five public information officers and two graphic artists running year-round.
Born and raised in San Bernardino, Romero earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from California State University, Long Beach -- a town familiar to him, having traveled there many times as a child to visit his grandparents.
Romero’s course work concentration was in magazine at Long Beach State. The experience set the stage for his profession once he arrived at CSUSB. For many years, he wrote the cover stories for the magazine that was once known as Panorama. As the publication evolved, it changed in size and style as well as name, known today as CSUSB Magazine. In 2000, Romero became managing editor. The publication is distributed to more than 65,000 alumni, students, parents, business and government leaders and donors to the university.
Covering news of the colleges of Arts and Letters and Natural Sciences, Romero’s work at CSUSB also includes writing press releases and working with reporters, writing scripts for and recording on-hold telephone messages, writing brochure copy and, in years past, writing humor for the Friday Bulletin, the university’s now outmoded and defunct employee newsletter. He also coordinates the Office of Public Affairs internship program, working with more than 35 interns since the early 1990s.
