About Your Publication

Here are some questions to keep in mind in developing your publication, before you meet with a publications staff member:

Message

  • What is the purpose of the publication?
  • What are your desired goals?
  • What is your message or theme of your publication?
  • Could you better accomplish your goals using a different tool or tactic?

Distribution

  • Who is your audience?
  • How will your publication be distributed? Will it be mailed? Will you need a reply card?
  • How many copies do you need?

Text and Artwork

  • Do you need help in writing the publication?
  • What kind of publication are you seeking (envelope, flier, poster, brochure, postcard, booklet, newsletter, etc.)?
  • Will your publication be full-color, grayscale or other?
  • What kind of artwork (photographs or illustrations) will you require?

Budget and Policy

  • What is your budget?
  • Will you be using state money, or a Foundation account?
  • Have you obtained the necessary approvals for the publication from your vice president, director or department head?
  • When do you need your publication? Please be specific with a date.
