Media Training

Media coverage can take many different forms, reach a variety of audiences and convey a variety of information. The common thread to all media coverage, however, is that it is based on news. An understanding of what makes news and how to leverage news is essential to working with the media.

The basis of all media training is built on three concepts:

  1. There are no magic words or spin to win reporters’ favor. A solid understanding of what the university department is/does and the ability to explain why it is important will always carry the day.
  2. News rules. Reporters may appreciate and value your insights, but without providing the media with real news angles your thoughts may just serve as background fodder.
  3. Media relations is an on-going process. Interviewing is a skill honed with time and practice.
